8 questions to upcoming designer Pauline van Dongen

Pauline van Dongen with her designs

Dutch designer Pauline van Dongen debuted at the Amsterdam International Fashion Week (AIFW) with her amazing collection Kinetic Landscapes. A collection that’s all about the effect of wind and water to nature. The Digitalistas spoke to her backstage after the show at the Westergas area in Amsterdam.

Well, here you are at AIFW showing off your collection to the Dutch fashion in crowd. Ever wanted to become a fashion designer?
“Not really. Till the age of 12 I always wanted to be a doctor, just like my dad. I was fascinated by science and researching, my favorite course was biology. I still find that very interesting, and I put that interest for science into my collections. I’m always busy researching new fabrics and shapes. It will be ‘my thing’ forever, because that’s what I love to do.”

Can you describe your collection in five words?
“Neutral, organic, innovative, flowing, light.”

What is it about?
“It’s all about the effect of wind and water to nature. The Wave – a ravine in Arizona – was my inspiration behind Kinetic Landscapes: its grooves, line patterns and waveforms created by the forces of nature really inspired me designing this collection. You see abstract constructed shapes, architectural items, graphic lines and shapes around the body referring to wind and water: the wind creates pliant whirls into rocks as water stands for reflecting and flowing – you see that in reflecting knitwear and soft leather.”

Does nature often forms an inspiration for you?
“Absolutely. I find it really interesting how nature moves in its space, just like human beings do.”

Lovely shoes too!
“Yes, they are. For this collection I collaborated with shoe designer Anna Korshun. The designs are made of laser cut thick leather. Don’t forget Nathalie Tappin, she created the industrial jewelries.”

Describe the feeling of 5 minutes before the show
“Very hectic and stressful but logical. Just think of an organized chaos!”

And 5 minutes afterward?
“Excitement mixed with happy feelings.”

Is there a famous person you’d love to dress?
“Not really. I’m not into celebrities at all. I just look at someone’s personality, that’s enough for me. It doesn’t matter to me if you’re famous or not. But if I had to choose, I’d pick Tilda Swinton. Her shoot for Another Magazine looks amazing.”

Any exciting plans for the future?
“Something amazing in London. Can’t tell you yet….”
