photo 3Do you know what’s hiding behind Dam Square? Located in the heart of Amsterdam, RUST is a tranquil, urban oasis for relaxation and massage, located on a small side street around the corner from Dam Square.

Founded five years ago by massage therapists Matthijs and Francina, RUST is based on the philosophy that we all need a little R&R from time to time. RUST specializes in massage based on classic techniques with no Buddhas, no chakras, no yin or yang – just pure, clean, relaxing massage.

The quaint space, which was many years ago a glass-making factory, is today converted into the RUST studio with two massage rooms: one with two beds (for couples’ massages), and another with a single bed. The most popular treatment is the classic one-hour relaxing massage, though they also offer hot stone, water pillow, deep tissue, yoga stretch and Ayurvedic treatments, in addition to accupuncture.photo 2

RUST also has a number of special “arrangements” which can be added to any treatment, so you can enjoy a smoothie, snacks, hot tea or even glass of champagne before the massage, topped off with a hot foot bath. It was great to change into a plush housecoat and slippers and simply chill out while soaking my feet, which helped me to unwind from my busy day before lying down on the massage bed.

The relaxation massage was an absolute pleasure, to say the least. Matthijs explained to me beforehand that the RUST technique is based slow massage – much slower than any massage I’d experienced before – which helps muscles to fully relax and unwind. The difference was noticeable, and after an hour I was totally ‘zen’ in a hazy twilight zone.

Because RUST is truly a city spa, it caters to busy people on the go. It’s easy to step in off the street and experience an hour of relaxation and time to unwind, before heading on your way again. Massage tables have been designed without holes for the face, so you can leave without a giant red circle over your face or smudged makeup.

RUST creates its own homemade massage oil from lavender, ginger and orange extracts, for an extremely light scent that’s not at all overpowering (so you won’t smell like a giant tea tree for the rest of the day). The formula is also non-greasy, so it doesn’t leave a residue on your skin or require you to go home and shower immediately after. They also sell the oil for at-home use.
