For years I’ve been using an old-fashioned razor for shaving. But with my trip to Thailand in mind, I believed it was time for something new. An epilator seemed to me like a nice option and a smart investment, so I wanted to try the Braun Silk-épil 5; a compact and affordable epilator without too many tricks. It comes with everything you need. An absolute benefit of this device is that it can be used in the shower! The Braun Silk-épil 5 Wet & Dry comes in 3 different editions; I have the 511 edition. This is the cheapest out of the Wet & Dry series, and comes with 1 cap and no added extras.
The epilator is wrapped in a box with a charger and a brush. This blue version can be demounted in 3 pieces. This way it’s easier to clean the device after use. A nice advantage is that the device fully charges in just 1 hour and can be used for at least half an hour.
I’ve heard many horror stories about epilators and the fact that it’s very painful and not always as effective. Now it was my turn to experience it myself. I tried the epilator for the first time very quickly ‘dry’, so not on a wet skin, just to experience the feeling. It was a bit of a disappointment, because it was very painful! It really felt like every hair, one by one -but also all at once- were ripped out of my skin. The next day I gave the epilator a second chance and tried it ‘wet’ under the shower. Much better! The first part was most painful, but after a while you get used to the feeling. In the shower it also feels less uncomfortable than on a dry skin. The epilator can be used on a higher and a lower stand. At first the low stand is most comfortable, but after a while you skin gets used to epilating and the high stand is perfectly fine as well, and besides, much more effective..
The epilating itself is a bit uncomfortable, and also because it’s the first time, much more painful than after epilating a few times. I’ve used the epilator on my thigh, under leg, bikini line and armpits. The legs are doable, the bikini line gets already quite painful, and the armpits are impossible! Maybe it’s my own pain tolerance, but I’ll be shaving my armpits with a regular razor for now. For the other parts I’ll be using the Braun Silk-épil, because it’s a good way to get rid of your hair for a longer time and hairs also come back more softer. You do have to shave the skin several times before all the hairs are plucked, but when you do, the epilator leaves very few hairs behind. Braun claims to remove all hairs from 0,5mm short and I think this statement is true.
The Braun Silk-épil 5 is a great choice for those who are looking for a good epilator but do not want to spend a lot of money on it. This epilator does his job well and is in my opinion the best way when it’s used under the shower. A disadvantage is that epilating is a painful occupation, but is has better results that shaving. It takes a little perseverance, but at the end you do have a good result.
