After a relatively indulgent summer season, I’ve been trying to get on a healthier track and introduce new superfoods to my diet. And the latest addition in my kitchen is – believe it or not – mushrooms.
I discovered Four Sigma Foods while reading up about healthy eating and was immediately intrigued by the company. Founded by a group of Finns in the USA, they’re seeking to popularize ancient superfood mushrooms and abandon the “food racism” that mushrooms face. As they say, “Mushrooms were nature’s best kept secret – until now!”
I’m sipping on a Chaga Mushroom Drink with Mint and Rosehip while I type this and while I didn’t quite know what to expect from a mushroom drink, it’s not at all unpleasant. It’s packed full of antioxidants thanks to 1500 mg of wild-crafted Siberian Chaga extract and it’s a major immune system booster – an excellent pick-me-up as we enter cold and flu season. The drink is vegan, paleo, sugar-free and caffeine-free, and simply needs to be mixed with some hot water.
For a morning boost try the Mushroom Coffee, which is made from a mix of 100% Arabica beans with Chaga and Cordyceps mushrooms (supporting immunity and adrenals, respectively). It’s got half the caffeine of a normal cup of coffee but double the effects thanks to the mushrooms; you’ll instantly feel energized and ready to kick-start your day. Plus, it’s less acidic than regular coffee so you can say goodbye to stomach burn.
For an afternoon treat I like the XOCO Mushroom Hot Chocolate Drink with Rishi and Sweet Chai. The ingredients help you to relax and unwind, while reducing stress and slowing the ageing process. The Reishi mushroom can also help to balance an overactive hormone system and improve sleep quality. Plus the yummy dark chocolate flavour totally hits the spot when my 4:00 p.m. sweet tooth kicks in.
