Thursday Treat: a taste of Marseille

Considering the ‘surprise’ element of our latest trip with srprs.me we were not sure if we should share some of our local discoveries….Nah, they’re too nice not to share!

Obviously, since our company was as keen on enjoying food as much as we do, we had to try several Marseille hotspots. So here they are:

Les Gamins

This cosy restaurant with fun lamp-art and vintage furniture is settled on the Cours Julien, a creative area which counts many bars and eateries. Their specialty is gourmet burgers, and according to the connaisseurs these are the best in town! We sure can’t prove them wrong after we’ve tasted the Deluxe burger with foie gras and fig chutney on top. The ingredients are all homemade: the burger buns, the fries, the sauces. You can really notice the quality of the food. Oh, and did we mention our dessert was an Oreo cheesecake?

Spok

Spok is actually a franchise concept, founded in Marseille 10 years ago. The idea is fast-fresh food in a hip, self service venue. Ideal for the lunch break or a quick snack. There’s a strong link with local produce and sustainability (homemade food, and biodegradable, recyclable packaging), which we like. The menu is international inspired and you’ll find sandwiches, salads, small dishes (daily changing dish, burgers, risotto’s), soups and broths and desserts. Spok is on the rise and opening in Paris soon.

Place Lorette

One of Marseille’s distinctive features is its multicultural vibe you’ll find in the districts surrounding the Vieux Port (old harbor). It’s in the Panier (the city’s oldest, restored neighborhood) that we found Place Lorette: authentic Morroccan food in a convivial, modern meets ethnic interior. The perfect hang out on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Your belly will be satisfied for €25 with a brunch including fresh mint tea, fresh fruit juice, semoula bread, crepes, homemade jams and marmelades, goat cheese briks, chicken pastilla, tajine, and a fresh fruit dessert.
