This place was already hyped by bloggers and magazines and it took us a little longer before we landed there ourselves. Last weekend though, was the perfect time to enjoy a (late) hangover brunch at Paper Planes.
Paper Planes is a breakfast/lunch restaurant. Perfect to relax and recover from the night before or for a pre- or post shopping spree break. The latter because it is located in the very center of Amsterdam: at the Rokin, which runs parallel to the city’s most famous shopping street, the Kalverstraat.
Our reason to meet at Paper Planes was a combination of a hangover cure followed by a shopping spree, and let’s not forget my urgent craving for pancakes. I rarely find American pancakes to my liking on breakfast menu’s, but since this venue promotes itself as a New American/LA style breakfast club, I was ready to be convinced with some bad ass pancakes!
Were they good, you wonder? Ab-so-lu-te-ly. I had to hold back from ordering a second portion. A little extra maple syrup (I loooove maple syrup) would have been even greater, but the creamy vanilla mascarpone and slices of strawberry made up for it.
My table companion is a tad more health-conscious than I am, and she ordered the ‘crushed avo on toast’. I often make it at home, and this version sprinkled with black sesame gave me the bright idea to add that on my home made versions as well.
Furthermore I’ve tried one of the juices, though that was a bit less successful. My fresh mango/pineapple juice was more of a pineapple juice with lost chunks of mango floating in it where I expected it to be a smooth blend of my favorite exotic fruits…
Nevertheless, Paper Planes is a nicely decorated place (vintage furniture, a guitar as decorative element), with a chill vibe, and we still have to taste some more dishes on the menu (the lamb sausages on a roasted pumpkin hash, accompanied by a Bloody Harry please!). See you when we’re having our next hangover! ;)
