The Fashion Eye: MBFWA Jef Montes

MBFWA_JefMontesOur new fashion contributor Shereen McFadden is herself a Fashion & Design graduate from Scotland. With her knowledge of fabrics and techniques she will report on different fashion subjects. First one up is the the MBFWA show report from Jef Montes.

Jef Montes – Illuminosa

If the LAB shows were to communicate the more conceptual realms of Fashion Design then Jef Montes was at home. Pursuing his reoccurring theme of religion he opened the show ready to breathe new life to his creations. To represent one immersing themselves in holy light, the first model poured blue paint on herself to stain her pure image. The dramatic start immediately invited viewers to watch the spectacle with anticipation.

Donning Priests’ gowns, exuberant dresses took stage. A simple palette of pure white and contrasting blue hues cut a striking vision. This was styled with berets worn as halo’s to emphasise the presence of religion and theatrics. Montes introduced a new age to the ancient Catholicism dress by illuminating crosses emblazoned on the garments.

The two themes intertwined through material manipulation and lucid fabric choices. Draping created flow, working with the fabric to glisten on its contoured waves and fish tail forms. Shapes also developed through pleating techniques to exaggerate form on shoulder details. Structure took importance over movement many times and the indulgent designs engulfed the models.

ArteZ- graduate Montes showcased a progressive collection, playing with tradition and creating a dramatic stage for his work all set to visualize the effect of lighting in experimental design, as this show was supported by Philips Lighting.
