Try the beauty look: Rodarte

In creating a makeup palette for their show at New York Fashion Week, it seems fitting that Aussie design duo Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte were inspired by their home and native land.

Looking to the Australian outback for inspiration, they used earthy, rustic, sandy tones in the show’s makeup palette. Models featured über-bronzed skin (for a super sun-kissed look) with light accents of pink. The result was an essence of supreme femininity as opposed to the ‘dirty’ feel that too much bronzer can sometimes create. Further paying homage to Aussie tradition, they reflected Aboriginal art in the show, seen in dotted tribal designs and prints.

Makeup was done by artist James Kiliardos of NARS Cosmetics, who used colours reminiscent of the rugged boulders, clay soil and glowing sunsets you’ll catch in the Outback.

Want to get the look?
Lightly dust your face with NARS’ Laguna Bronzing Powder, including eyebrows to achieve the ‘windblown’ look. Add a touch of Madly Blush on the cheeks for the pink highlight, plus NARS’ Vent Glacé Duo Eyeshadow (new for fall!) on the eyes. On lips, try the Bolero Velvet Matte Lip Pencil, which again touches on the rustic-pinky hues of Australia’s desert lands.

For hair, rock a ‘bedhead’ look! Disheleved, tousled hair was all the rage. Don’t be shy with volumizing and heat-protection products, like Kérastase Mousse Volumactive (which was used on models at the Rodarte show).
