A little chat with young designer Marije de Haan

Marije during Lichting 2010

Marije de Haan got the G-star RAW Talent Award at Lichting 2010. This prize for the best academy graduates is part of the Amsterdam International Fashion Week. For the young designer this meant the beginning of a rollercoaster year. She got a € 10.000 grant and went to New York to assist G-star to do a catwalk show at the New York Fashion Week. She managed to design a second edition of her collection FLATLINERS. A collection that was shown at the 12th edition of the AIFW. Digitalista E did an interview with Marije about her fabulous job, her amazing trip to The Big Apple and – of course – all about her second collection FLATLINERS 2.0.

Marije has graduated from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. She was one of the lucky girls selected by her teachers to show her collection FLATLINERS at Lichting 2010.

Congratz, Marije! I did an interview with you right after the big final at Lichting 2010 last year. What happened after that?
“It was craziness. And a mad house. The press went all over me and I couldn’t walk down the street without people recognizing me. But I enjoyed every bit of it.”

How was The Big Apple?
“Great. I assisted G-star RAW for four days before the big show at the New York Fashion Week. I thought it was really impressive:  fashion is a much more ‘bigger deal’ in NYC than it is in Amsterdam.”

That’s true. Can you give an example?
“Fashion in New York is very commercial. In Amsterdam designers can be more creative. I love to experiment with fabrics, I don’t like mass production at all: instead I make every single piece by hand. And I love doing research before designing an outfit.”

Your collection FLATLINERS 2.0 is an improved edition of the one you showed at the G-star RAW Talent Award. What is so different about version 2.0?
“It’s not all that different, but I’ve improved parts that didn’t work out in the first edition. The inspiration behind it is still the same: crime scenes from the second half of the 20th century. FLATLINERS 2.0 is more general, it contains less statement, but it’s still surrealistic. Also, I didn’t want to show what the people had already seen during Lichting 2010. For example I did away the shirt that covered the heads of the models so I could express the identity of the person.”

Any plans for 2011?
“A holiday would be nice. And working on my third collection!”

Marije is working on her website. Check it out soon in here. For now you can watch the video we’ve made yesterday. And check out those amazing shoes from United Nude:
